QUINTA DA ATELA

The history of Quinta da Atela, in Alpiarça, dates back to the 14th century, more specifically to 1346, when its name was still Quinta da Goucha e Atela and its owner Afonso Telo de Menezes, Count of Ourém and Barcelos, son-in-law of D. Nuno Álvares Pereira. It was later donated to a religious order, the Convent of Graça in Santarém. At the end of the 20th century, the estate was bought by Isidoro Maria de Oliveira, founder of a great sausage company, Izidoro. After the April 25 Revolution, in 1974, the estate was occupied for a decade, and after that it was returned to the previous owners.

In 2017, it was bought by its current owners, entrepreneurs Anabela Tereso and Fernando Vicente, a power couple linked to a big farming and livestock holding, Valgrupo. With a completely new identity, promoted by the unwearying leader Anabela, all of the buildings and outdoor areas have been restored, including the main house, and the entire wine range reorganized.

Located in the south bank of the Tejo river, Quinta da Atela owns 600 hectares of land, 150 of which filled with vineyards. Here, you'll find grape varieties such as the whites Fernão Pires (the flagship white grape of the Tejo wine region), Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Arinto, Moscatel Graúdo, Alvarinho, or Viosinho; and reds like Castelão (the most distinctive red grape of the region), Pinot Noir, Trincadeira Preta, Alicante Bouschet, Merlot, Caladoc, Aragonez, Syrah, Touriga Nacional, Cabernet Sauvignon, or Petit Verdot.

There’s also a very old Castelão vineyard called Carvalhita, a 75-year-old plot that originates wines of great complexity and finesse.

In addition to an exceptional range of wines, the company has one of the most beautiful wine tourism facilities of the Tejo region, offering unique experiences that combine wine culture — tastings and more — with lodging and events. All of this culminated in 2022, with Quinta da Atela being awarded the prize for “Best Wine Tourism” in the Tejo region.
